This island is famous not only as the island of the glass, but also as the native place of the Vivarini, the family of painters who contributed so much to make Venice one of the richest town in art treasures and the favourite resort for the cream of Venetian nobilíty. The interior is decorated with mosaics whose splendor is comparable only to those of St.Mark's. San Donato's altarpiece, paìnted in 1310, is attríbuted to Paolo Veneziano.
